Why does God allow an obliteration of people in a natural disaster without seemingly a thought or concern? Why God doesn’t just remove Satan and his evil schemes that he executes in this world? If God is all-powerful (omnipotent), this task would certainly be within his power. If God is all-knowing (omniscience), he knows the evil processes Satan will instigate. If God is all-loving and completely good, God should want to protect his children from any harm that may come to them.
• Evil is at work in this world, but not in the next.
God created the world in which the difficulty of evil/sin is possible, but it was not in his design that we participate in it. Man created the problem of sin and brokenness at the first fall of Adam. Adam exercised his free will by choosing to deny our creator’s direct command and ate the forbidden fruit. (Genesis 3:6-7) Written in his book, Intellectuals don’t need God & other modern myths, Alister McGrath maintained, “How do they (we) know that there cannot be morally sufficient reasons for God permitting suffering?” Consider the possibility that to “die” from this life and go to heaven is not punishment. Philippians 1:21 reveals, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain”, therefore, gaining entrance into a heaven with overwhelming joy, happiness, and love. Do we as finite humans, with limited knowledge, have a capacity to judge if evil that has occurred is not allowed by God for sufficient reasons unknown to us? It is within boundaries of God’s known character attributes that he is all-loving. With that assurance we can assume that God is restraining evil in this world. God is inhibiting wickedness until his overall redemptive strategy is achieved. This permits all who will come to know Jesus Christ time to place their faith in him.
23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” (1 Peter 2:23–24)
One would assume that God could stop evil, but to do so would require the end of this world. No one knows “the day or hour” of the end as we are told twice in the gospel of Matthew and once in the gospel of Mark. “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Mark 13:32) To have an all-knowing God intervene during times of great evil would diminish the reason for sending his son to bear the suffering of this life for us. There is no pain, murder, evil, hate or anything not perfect in heaven. Yes, God could make it trouble-free to gain the promised reward heaven, but at what cost? The cost was his Son, and at his suffering, the admission price was paid. To maroon his children in the precarious position of an opulent spoiled child, waiting for the great protection of a parent would lead us to be unable to freely choose God’s forgiveness and grace He provided in Jesus.
Man, a broken self-deprecating individual could not justly determine the level of pain or evil at which point God should intercede. Would murder be the precipitating evil? How many murders must occur prior to intervention? Should the count be taken into consideration, the murder of one or the murder of 100 or more? If the needless killing is of someone who has lived a long fulfilling life, then is this considered a “needless death”? Does the death of a young child hold more weight within the balance of judgment of evil? Man’s finite mind is in no position to make decisions such as these, as all life is considered sacred. If not murder, what about natural evils that are not initiated by man? If we pronounce floods, tsunamis and other natural disasters that appear to our finite minds to needlessly take life as sufficiently wrong humanity cannot rightly conclude as to what level of disaster should or should not be contained as we have no visibility to the destination of the intended purposes.
God can and does intercede against all forms and methods of evil and when doing so carries out His design for His creation. We are not God, so to second-guess when God should or should not step in places us as God’s equal. Equal footing between God and man does not increase the status of man, but serves to decrease the status of a perfect, all loving, all knowing God. By doing this, He then ceases to be God. We need God to be God; man needs God in all his impeccable glory.
• So God restrains evil in this world, what does this mean for me?
Shake your fists, yell, scream and stomp your feet at God, and plead with Him to intervene for all wickedness and earthly sufferings. God is great enough to shoulder the burden. Place your reliance for security in this life in one who was sent to bear the evil and sin of this world, Christ Jesus. If it is God’s will to stop the evil for the last time he will do so. Directing your attention to Him is to correctly place your faith and expectant optimism exactly where it should be.
“4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelations 21:4)

Events of the past week were disheartening. Many in our society watched in dismay as the unthinkable became a reality and a new law of the land. Many thought it would never come to this. Some thought the battle was lost long ago and this day was inevitable. Personally I watched in shock and amazement as the battle shifted to social media. Dividing lines were drawn, statements proclaimed. Each claiming their “moral high ground” as masses watched and condemned or applauded the proclamation. Many pronounced the “who am I to judge position” or the “#LoveWins in the end” position. As this unfolded, I question where we are as church, universally speaking. Are we really fulfilling the great commission? Is this what the prescriptive commands in the Bible are to have us do?
As a universal Christian church we have lost our ability to provide a witness for the gospel of Jesus Christ by relinquishing the ability to properly evaluate society and/or a person’s actions or beliefs.
• You shouldn’t judge!
Many take the Bible passage in Matthew 7:1 of “Judge not, that you will be judged” and stop there. The prohibition is not to judge others in the same way as the, “Pharisees, who were very rigid and severe, very magisterial and supercilious, in condemning all about them, as those commonly are, that are proud and conceited in justifying themselves.” (Henry, M. 1994) Unfortunately, this first century exegesis of the Biblical text fails to carry over to a modern context very well. We are considering this passage in the 21st century context. There are no Pharisees currently around, but many still attempt to act as they did 2000 years ago. This line of thought from Jesus is cautioning us against judging hypocritically, uncharitably, unmercifully, with a spirit of revenge, and a desire to do damage. We should however, “Counsel him, and help him, but do not judge him.” (Henry, M. 1994)
Nonetheless, the statement of “You shouldn’t judge!” needs to be addressed. Do people judge other actions, items or people? Yes, and it is absurd to think that we do not do this waking moment of every day! A “You shouldn’t judge!” assertion is a self-refuting statement. A self-refuting statement is defined; “a statement is one that fails to meet its own standard, as another example, “I cannot speak a word in English.” We have to judge in order to function. We judge our behavior, others behavior, thoughts, what they value, and what they believe as determination of what coincides with reality. The “You shouldn’t judge!” statement is a judgment! It makes a claim to know truth. A value proposition of what is right and what is wrong.
For the sake of argument, let’s investigate what the Bible provides as a prescriptive command not to judge. John the Baptist in Matthew 3:7 told the Pharisees and Sadducees, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” I ask you this, how did John know the Pharisees and Sadducees were a “brood of vipers”? John formulated a judgment of their actions and behaviors and called them into repentance! Other example is Paul speaking in Athens in Acts 17. Paul is rendering a judgment against their culture of idols that they worship.
22 So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. (Acts 17:22-25)
The Apostle Paul and John the Baptizer, with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, made a judgment claims against a society, a culture, and groups. They attempted to show them the inaccuracies of their worldviews that would not lead them to repentance and righteousness before the one true God. As people of the 21st century, and as Christians, we are called to do the same. By pointing to the one true God, the one God who sent his Son so we may have redemption when placing our trust in him.
• Can we fulfill the mission?
The recent political decisions are not the end of the world. We should remind each other that the Christian faith has rarely been in the advantageous position in either culture or the political realms in the past 2000 years. This is but another small step to removing the coherent truth claims of the gospel message from the public square of ideas. What are we to do?
While many stimulating sermon messages this past weekend were crafted and conveyed, many used the “love wins in the end” perspective. Twitter hashtags created the #LoveWins message further creating a buzz of anticipation in the social media realm. Both sides of the argument claimed “love” and rainbows with an exciting splash of colors permeated all corners of the internet. While this made everyone feel really good. Happy colors have a way of uplifting a person’s philological state. (Basic commercial marketing 101) It accomplished nothing in the way of constructive dialog about the issues our culture faces.
#LoveWins alienates both sides from the issue at hand. Both are claiming to be “loving” faction. From the Christian perspective, love does NOT win, love HAS ALREADY won. Love won at the cross of Calvary when Jesus was crucified for us. All of us, nasty, gross, deplorable, self-serving sinners benefited from God’s redemptive action in his creation. Jesus was sent as a sign of God’s claim on his creation providing pathway to him as a substitutionary atonement that diverts God’s wrath. Yes, wrath! You cannot have love without hate. An example is; if you love children, you hate child abuse. You cannot have one without the other. It follows then, if God loves his people, created in the likeness of himself, there will be a natural hate of sin because of his love for us. In some aspects, the universal church has minimized this attribute of God. God will not be mocked and there is a wrath of God coming for those who make the willing choice not to follow him. Additionally, a #Lovewins mantra fails to address the full totality of the problem. A biblical love is “sacrificial, efficacious, and seeks what is right (1 Corinthians 13) and it cannot intersect with sin.” Yes, love your neighbor, but no, I do not have to affirm or condone sinful behavior. It would be the same if; I in my sinful nature was having an inappropriate relationship with my neighbor’s wife. You, as my other neighbor knew this was taking place. At this point you’re forced to make a judgment. Is this right or is it wrong? Remember, for those who may wish to walk the fence on this, you receive no free pass. No judgment of right or wrong is really a judgment. A non-decision is really a decision stated in the words you do not speak. Sexual sin is sin and it is wrong.
Speaking to my own community of faith, our leadership provided a message that was thoughtful and timely regarding our current cultural state. Outlined in the message were points to consider about Satan’s actions in God’s creation. To follow along with those points made, I wish to go one step further. How do we look to ourselves and make our lives a consistent Christian witness?
1. Stop the defeatist Christian naval gazing!
Collectively more time is spent watching television, posting pictures of stupidity on social media (guilty!) and faking a coherent Christian worldview then actually engaging in a discussion about problems of the heart (read, sinful nature) we all have. Your children, your car, your job, even you spouse are not god, but in some cases, we have made them one. The one true God should be your God, and if you really proclaim him as Christ and Lord of all, then do the difficult work and open your Bible and learn something about him!
2. Engage in learning!
Learn about the issues and how to develop a Christian worldview. Read a book. Not just any book, but a book that discusses the historical positons of the Christian church. Something written by a pillar of the Christian faith (Wesley, Calvin, or Luther) or by a highly educated scholar and the book was critically reviewed by their peers. Any new-age semi-Christian spiritual garbage written by a “popular” pastor, who ignores the basic tenets of the Christian faith, is rubbish.
3. Connect with a Growth Group and get in the game!
The modern church so adores the doctrines of Justification and Adoption, but barely utters anything about the doctrines of Sanctification and Perseverance. (If you don’t know what those words mean, you just proved my point.) Learn the doctrines of the Christian faith and learn how to teach them to your family and defend them in the public square of ideas.
• In conclusion…
Stop looking at the left or right political party to save you. Learn everything you can about the one true Savior of the world. He alone is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. (Rev 19:16) God is sovereign over all, but we have a role to play in his Kingdom.

In 2013 a nationwide phone-poll research study was commissioned by now shuttered Mars Hill Church. 913 thousand calls were dialed, 70 thousand conversations occurred and of that, one thousand, twelve minute individual interviews were conducted. This data, taken from the age ranges of 18 to 44, told us that the number one objection if Christianity is that, “it is intolerant”. Significant information from the culture in which we live in, but what is the definition of tolerance? Are we talking about the same concept of toleration of others?

Dictionary.com 2013: tol·er·ance, 1. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one’s own; freedom from bigotry. 2. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward opinions and practices that differ from one’s own. 3. interest in and concern for ideas, opinions, practices, etc., foreign to one’s own; a liberal, undogmatic viewpoint. 4. the act or capacity of enduring; endurance
• In our modern culture, we have modified the definition of tolerance.
By the definitions above, somewhere the meaning of tolerance has changed. In my own Christian walk, I have always felt this tension, but never understood where it originated. As Christians, the Bible tells to “love our neighbor, as we love ourselves” (Mark 12:31). We our told in our churches, to “go out, and be disciples for Christ” (Matthew 28) and to love people and share the way we view the world, but when we do our culture pushes back. We are told we are wrong, old fashioned, uneducated. Even worse, we are called hateful, raciest and bigoted. Why is this case?
I would argue that it is the changed definition of tolerance (or intolerance) that is a critical diversion of two completely opposing worldviews. As Christians, we are sharing our faith with the assumption that the receiver will understand our message. We take for granted that when sharing the way we view the world; it is received, mentally processed and understood. This is assuming too much.
On one hand, a non-Christian views the world as “getting better”. This view could be traced back to the Enlightenment age, when human achievement through scientific discovery pushed the boundaries of authority. The non-Christian might feel that with further education and self-discovery the world we live in and how we treat one another will continue to improve over the course of time. However, Christians do not view the world under these enlightenment knowledge conditions. Our view can be traced back to Genesis 3 and the “fall of man”. We view that the world is not getting better, but worse. Stated in a theological term, a “total depravity” that stems from a heart that is separated from God. This Christian doctrine of the fall of humankind understands the Bible teaches, as a consequence all people born into the world are morally bankrupt, imprisoned to sin and is, apart from God’s grace unable to follow God or choose to turn to Christ in faith for salvation.
“10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.” (Romans 3:10-11)
• So where does this new definition of tolerance leave us?
It leaves us with two people, who are literally facing completely opposite directions on how the world works, and how we are to interact with it. Two completely different belief systems, that each seem outlandish and unbelievable to the other. When we share beliefs or worldviews we are assuming the other person views the world as we see it, or at least, close to it. We are not even in the same ballpark!
So, if we are viewing humanity completely differently, where does the tolerance come in? The definition of tolerance, as discussed above, has changed from “capacity of enduring; or the act of enduring”, with someone who has a different viewpoint to “affirming someone” who has a different viewpoint.” When we tolerate we endure, we love, we have patience, we have steadfastness, and sufferance with their opposing viewpoint.
The tolerance definition has moved to full affirmation of the opposing view; anything less you will appear intolerant of the opposing viewpoint. This makes no sense, and goes against the very meaning of the word tolerance. Unfortunately, in our modern culture we now must believe in everything, (or affirm) every belief or run the risk of being labeled hateful, raciest or bigoted. This leaves little room for the Christian to share their worldview of the redeeming offer of salvation in Jesus Christ and further exacerbates the privatization of faith from the public square.
Of course, isn’t the non-Christian being “intolerant” of the Christian worldview? The answer would be yes! It would be a self-refuting statement. A self-refuting statement is defined; “a statement is one that fails to meet its own standard, as an example, I cannot speak a word in English.” Other examples of self-refuting statements are; “You shouldn’t try to convert people.” The non-theist is trying to convert you to their point of view. “It is arrogant to claim to have the truth.” The non-theist is making the claim that they have the truth. “You should be tolerant of all views.” Again, the non-theist is claiming that all views are acceptable, but showing no tolerance to your opposing view. Exactly who are the intolerant groups here?
• What does this mean for me?
As the Bible teaches us throughout Christianity’s history culture has made every attempt to push it to the sidelines. Repeatedly, the truth of the word never fades, never changes, and never fails us as the enduring truth. Christians must continue to lovingly share the gospel, and actively live out their faith, to do anything less is dishonest to ourselves and goes against the gospel. Christians must push back against culture and treat everyone with love and respect. This does NOT mean we should be tolerant of sinful deeds, elicit behavior, or activities that are not grounded in a biblical understanding of the world we all live in. On the other hand, it does mean that we are called to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16) in a world that is desperately searching for meaning and understanding of human nature. The gospel is Jesus Christ is that coherent and tolerant worldview to answer society’s inquiries about itself.
The foundation of Christianity is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the cornerstone of the faith. Without the resurrection Christianity is a social club gathering on Sunday mornings to discuss steps to a better marriage, job, or other life skill. Christianity is something more, something deeper than a 12 step program to improved living.
The resurrection is about humankind and sin. You might be thinking, “hold on, I’m a good person. I haven’t killed anyone or robbed a convenience store” Unfortunately comparing yourself to your neighbor, Hitler or Mother Theresa is not the standard. The standard should be someone who is perfect, flawless and never sinned. Perhaps that is someone who was raised from the dead. That is the standard. It’s about an unwavering standard that does not change, forever.
Jesus Christ was crucified by Pontius Pilate and the disciples of Jesus maintained to have seen risen appearances Him, and that forever altered the course of their lives. New Testament scholars that are both Christian and secular agree on some facts of the life, death and resurrection of Christ. We will briefly outline the top three details that a majority of scholars agree on.
In addition to the Bible, other writings are available that document that Jesus was killed by crucifixion. Evidence from Tacitus (55-115 AD), a Roman historian wrote about Jesus in The Annals, XV: 44. Along with Josephus (37- 100 AD) referred to Jesus and his death in his writings called the Antiquities. Josephus testifies, “About the same time there lived Jesus, a wise man for he was a performer of marvelous feats and a teacher of such men who received the truth with pleasure. He attracted many Jews and many Greeks. He was the Christ. When Pilate sentenced him to die on the cross, having been urged to do so by the noblest of our citizens; but those who loved him at the first did not give up their affection for him. And the tribe of the Christians, who are named after him, have not disappeared to this day.”
These writings from outside the Bible confirm much of what the Bible says about Jesus. The manner of the way Jesus lived and died was unique. It also asserts he performed “marvelous feats” and He had many followers. With this fact confirmed both inside the Bible and outside using other historical writers it is safe to say that Jesus Christ lived, performed some type of awe-inspiring acts, had many believers, and was killed by crucifixion.
“14 afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen.” (Mark 16:14)
The Gospel of Mark is one of the earliest gospel writings to resurrection (33 A.D) of Jesus Christ and this verse is a reliable and accurate account of what the disciples believed happened. The appearance of a risen Jesus is a life altering event. Imagine you were sitting around the dining room table and a friend that had passed away appeared and started talking to you, you would remember this event! The disciples truly believed they had witnessed him, they had to tell people and they were willing to die to spread the message of Jesus Christ. People are not willing to die for a something they know is not true. You may be thinking, “What about the people who committed the acts of terror on September 11th 2001?” The distinction is between knowing something is a lie and dying for it, and believing something is a lie and dying for it. Best articulated by Dr. Gary Habermas PhD, of Philosophy, Liberty University, “Liars do not make martyrs.” The disciples would have known the resurrection appearances Jesus were a lie if the resurrection account was made up. Why would they be willing to die for a fabricated lie? By comparison, the September 11th terrorists did not know their ideology to fly airplanes in to buildings was/is a lie. They believed it, and were willing to die for an incorrect belief.
“19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” (John 20:19)
Imagine Paul’s clear recollections of the day that changed his life dramatically. In an instant, he went from an eradicator of followers of Jesus Christ to one of the greatest champions of the Christian faith.
How did Paul know what occurred at the resurrection? Because he received it directly from the eye-witness accounts from the Apostles who were there. (Galatians 2:1-21) The apostle Paul took this confirmed and trustworthy information and wrote 1 Corinthians 15 somewhere between 54-57AD. At most Paul’s letter to the Corinth was authored 27 years after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, again a very early account by historical standards so that verse was written incredibly close to the event. You may remember that the writings of Plato were 1200 years after the events documented. So 27 years removed is credible for documenting what occurred during a specific time period.
Consider this; do you remember where you were when the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart shortly after launch? Challenger’s last flight was January 28th, 1986. It has been almost 30 years since crisp winter day, back dropped against a clear blue sky. I can remember exactly where I was. I was sitting in a high school auditorium watching the history event on television. At the time I didn’t know that this brief moment in time would be burned into my memory, so clearly that I can recall the hush and shock that came over my classmates. The feeling of joy brought on by being out of my regular class schedule rushed from me as the white smoke trails from the rocket boosters fell from the sky. The day of September 11th, 2001 has the same effect. Life altering incidents transform someone. It formulates memories, beliefs and opinions on how we view and interpret the world for years to come.
The resurrection confirmed by Biblical narrative from eye-witness accounts, early historical writings from first century authors, and facts agreed upon by both Secular and Christian New Testament scholars, formulates the Christians belief today that Jesus Christ rose from the dead. This means that God cares for you so much that He has provided a way for you to be reconciled from your sin by believing in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. You are not lost. You have been found and a miracle has been provided to you so you can believe. You can continue to doubt and wrestle with hard questions. That is natural and expected, but you have to look honestly at the historical evidence and come to your own conclusion. Keep seeking and asking questions the answers will come.
“12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:12-14)

Should someone believe in God? The Christian Bible asserts,“11 Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for, and your will they existed and .”(Revelation 4:11) Christians believe that God is a personal creator, loving, merciful and knowable. The Bible tells us about God, who he is, what has done and will do. Can we know God exists without the Bible? Yes, there is very good evidence for the rational belief in the existence of God. the Bible!
· Does the universe exist?
Of course it does, we are all here functioning, enjoying our families and friends in this world. We see the created world all around us. Where did it come from? The modern education system teaches the Big Bang theory and then evolutionary theory over billions of years created all that we see. That is avoiding the answer. Take a step back further, to what started the chain of events. In everything in our lives, we know it had a cause. It had to come from somewhere. The computer you’re looking at, the chair you’re sitting on originated from somewhere. It didn’t just spontaneously pop into existence from nothing. Imagine for a minute how funny the world would be if items just popped in and out of reality that we live in. If a pink pony unexpectedly appeared next to you on the couch, you would be looking for an explanation of where that pink pony came from! Consequently, both the pink pony and the universe all around us must have a cause.
The line of reasoning it would look like this:
1. Whatever begins to exist has a cause.
2. The universe began to exist
3. Therefore, the universe has a cause.
We know that all things that begin to exist have a cause. That is reasonable. The universe began to exist. This is attested to by the Big Bang theory of the creation of the universe, again reasonable to believe this point. Therefore, the universe has a cause. The question remains as to what is that cause.
For the universe and everything in it, including time itself to be created, that creator is required to be . The universe must have been created supernaturally by an that can create on its own free will. This outside of the time that was created when the universe began. By definition the “uncaused creator being” can be a God that is transcendent, infinite and eternal creator. Anything that is created into an existence cannot be god, thus God is the uncaused, cause of the universe!
· Why does this universe support life?
Sir Isaac Newton once said, “This most beautiful system of the sun, planets and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent and powerful Being.” Scientists know our universe is a very special place. If any of the physical properties of the universe were just slightly different, the universe and life would not exist! Here are a few examples:
1. After the Big Bang, if the universe expanded at a rate of one millionth slower than it did, expansion of the universe would have stopped.
2. “If the thickness of the earth’s crust were greater, too much oxygen would be transferred to the crust to support life. If thinner, volcanic activity would make life on earth impossible.”
3. Jupiter’s planetary gravitational pull acts as a cosmic buffer protecting the earth from bombardment from asteroids and comets moving around our solar system.
There are many other environmental constants (over 100) that need to be “just right” in order for the universe to sustain life. If any are just slightly different, no life on earth exists. Stating the argument formally, it looks like this:
1. The fine-tuning of the universe is due to either; physical necessity, chance or design.
2. It is not due to physical necessity or chance.
3. Therefore, it is due to design.
Could the finely tuned values to create the universe be what they are due to an unknown physical necessity? No, the constants and quantities are not necessary. They must have the values they do in order to support life. How does random chance fair? Not well, if left to chance any number of random variables of the universe could have occurred if the cosmos spontaneously originated out of nothing! Could it be design? Yes, that is a reasonable conclusion. God is a designer. An eternal creator of the universe specifically setup to sustain life for His creation. Does this support that belief in God is plausible? Yes, a universe that was created by a transcendent, infinite and eternal creator can have the “just right” attributes for a universe that sustains life.
· If universe began to exist and it is a special place. What does this mean for me?
“19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature
have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the
things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:19-20)
we have good reasons to believe God exists without using the Bible!
There are more reasons I would encourage you to investigate. I invite you to genuinely search for answers. (Jeremiah 29:13) Read the Bible, investigate thoroughly and ask questions. Asking questions like these defines what it means to be human. They deserve consideration. If there is an omnipresent, omnipotent eternal creator God who created the universe, than why is it so incompatible that he sent Jesus Christ to redeem us? We will cover that later…

We cannot do without the doctrine that Jesus Christ is God
To what is religion reduced, if the belief in the Divinity of Christ be taken away? Your attention is invited to this important question, apart from any discussion of the Scriptural argument for the doctrine.
There are some who do not doubt it, and yet do not seem to fell how completely it penetrates into every truth, and doctrine, and promise of the Word of God.
Christianity becomes meagre and hopeless and comfortless, if you leave this out. Rob religion of this jewel, and all its peace and power and glory are gone. We cannot do without the doctrine of a Divine Christ.
Go over the truths, which form the leading features of the hope and the knowledge of a true and happy believer.
Man is a sinner, and cannot save himself. He is in love with sin. He is condemned for his sin. He has a polluted heart, and the sentence of death is written upon him.
He cannot be saved unless two things take place. His guilt must be blotted out, and his heart must be changed. He must be pardoned or justified. He must also be made alive, or born again.
The sinner can only be pardoned in one way, namely, be the sin being laid upon a substitute. The sinner can only be made holy by passing from death unto life. And when alive, he can only be kept alive, not by himself, but by a power greater than himself.
He believes that when he dies it is to rise again; that his condition hereafter shall be eternal happiness; that he shall be conqueror, and more than conqueror, over sin, and death and Satan, forever.
He is one that even now has free access to his Father in heaven. He knows that his prayer reaches to Him, and prevails; that all things are working together for his good; that the earth may tremble, and the nations be shaken, but that the evil shall not overtake him.
This is but a sketch of these great things- justification, sanctification, glorification, victory. Would you consent to part with any of them? Which of them would you give up?
Now, all these privileges and blessings hang upon this fact, that the Lord Jesus is God. Take this away, and all collapses. We cannot do with a Divine Savior.
Take the subject of sin. A thoughtful mind sees that it is a mightier one than we can conceive. Who can estimate its effects, for these reasons, that God hates it to a degree that is beyond our comprehension, and will punish it with a penalty far beyond what men think it deserves? “Fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell: yea, I say unto you, Fear him.” These are words of awful import. How is such an evil to be dealt with? There is only one way made know to us: the sin must be transferred to another. A SUBSTITUTE comes forward to take it on himself, and he bears all the penalty. But who can do this? None but one. None but the Eternal himself can bear a penalty sufficient to counter-balance enteral woe.
We cannot, then, be satisfied with any substitute unless that substitute be Divine. No created angel could stand in my place and say, “I will bear all his iniquity, and heal him by my stripes, and give him peace by enduring his chastisement.”
We are told that this satisfaction for sin has been paid in BLOOD. “Without shedding of blood there is no remission.” Life has been forfeited, and life has been surrendered. “The life is in the blood” (Lev. xvii), and the blood has been shed. It is blood that purges consciences from dead works, to serve the living God. In blood are made white robes of the great multitude before the Throne. It is by blood that the sinner is justified. By blood he overcomes. By blood he enters into the holiest. Peace is made by the blood of the Cross. Redemption is obtained by the precious blood of the Lamb. The Church of God is purchased by blood. Can the blood of a creature do all this? How can this blood be so potent and precious, unless there be a Divine element in its value?
Dead in trespasses and sins all are by nature. The unconverted, unchanged sinner is dead- incapable of serving or glorifying God. Unless the be implanted within him the principle of a NEW LIFE, he cannot be saved. Life must be created in the soul, or it is dead forever. Born again he must be, or he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. He must pass from death to life. Who can effect this? Was he a creature only that restored life to the daughter of Jairus, or called Lazarus from the tomb? Who but the Creator can give life to a dead soul? Can you be satisfied that anyone else has power enough to take the dead, motionless heart, and breathe life into it? No; you cannot dispense with Him who is “Resurrection and the Life.” You cannot be born again with the power of the Creator.
Do I know my own heart? Can I penetrate into the mysteries of my own nature, or search into the mysteries out my own spirit? No; it is beyond my powers. This This heart is “deceitful above all things.” It has depths and dangers in it that I cannot fathom. I want ONE WHO CAN SEARCH AND TRY IT. I want a power that can pierce into the joints and marrow, and discern the thoughts and intents of the heart. None but He who made the soul can do this. None but a Divine Spirit can hear and understand the unutterable groaning’s. None but such a one can detect the deceits, and spy out the perils, and reveal to myself what I am. The Word of God alone is living and powerful enough for this. None else can claim to have the manifold wisdom. None else has all truth. None but He has the light shining in the dark place.
One of the images that ministers comfort and strength to the Christian is that which exhibits Christ as the SHEPHERD, and his people as the sheep. Very precious are the thoughts that gather around this idea of the Lord Jesus. How many have rejoiced in the words, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” It would be painful indeed to be deprived of the belief that our Savior is truly “the great Shepherd.” Weak, straying defenseless, the sheep want this Mighty One. He must be so strong that none can pluck them out of his hand- so strong as to be able to lay the lost sheep on his shoulder, and to carry the lambs in his bosom. He must be so loving as to lay down his life for them- so great as to give them eternal life. These things are very precious. We must not be robbed of them; if Jesus is not God, what becomes of his power to give eternal life to his sheep? They cannot do without him. Their great Shepherd was brought again from the dead through the blood of the everlasting covenant. Can this be the blood of a mere creature?
Again; we are soldiers. We have a battle to fight- such a battle as cannot be matched with any earthly conflict. The devil is the foe. The battlefield is the heart of man; the issue of it must be the loss or salvation of the soul. Out only hope lies in this, that the Captain of the salvation is FIGHTING THE BATTLE; that he comes forth to make war, conquering and to conquer, putting all enemies under his feet, and securing the victory to his people. Who can he be but one, “King of Kings, and Lord of lords”? Shall we trust our battle to any one less? Can we be defended in any other armor than his- the armor of God?
Death has a sting. The grave has a victory. Who is to take that sting away?- to rescue from that victory? Who is to ABOLISH DEATH, and to bring to light life and immortality, but the Almighty God? Unless this be so, I cannot meet death. I shudder and shrink from the thought of it, did I not believe that my Savior is one who has overcome death, and destroyed him that had the power of death. Deity must be in that Savior to whom I can trust my spirit when life is on the ebb, and the world fading away. In that solemn hour, what would it be to have none but a creature mediator!
When we look round and look forward, how much seems dark and perplexing! The Christian suffers much. Losses and griefs, pain and danger, come upon him. Many a bitter trail meets him, and dark clouds gather, and the way is slippery. But we read that “all things are working together for his good.” No matter how sharp and obscure and bitter they may be, there is a giant hand ruling and guiding and causing all these things- these events so harsh and untoward- these blows so heavy and unaccountable- to work together, to converge to one end, the good and blessing of the children of God. Will you part with this text? No: it has been the consolation of millions. But if you are to take it and lean upon it, you must have a SAVIOUR WHO CAN HOLD ALL THINGS IN HIS HANDS, and shape all the events, and wield all the influences and doings and occurrences of earth, according to his own will. He can do this of whom we know he “upholdeth all things by the word of his power.” He has power over all flesh. All power in heaven and earth is his, and all things are given into his hands.
It is not on his power only, but on his LOVE, that the Christian delights to dwell. What amount of love is to satisfy us? Must it not be a love which shall know no change? Which shall not be affected by our unworthiness? Which shall not be enough to take in even the enemy and the ungodly? There is a love which passeth knowledge. (Eph. iii.19.) There is a love from which no power can separate us. (Rom. viii. 35.) Shall anything less content the soul? Can any other but God so love us? If we are to rejoice in this marvelous love, must we not feel also that it is but a sad and miserable doctrine which gives us a Savior whose love could never rise to such a Divine and unutterable intensity as this?
It is a happy and blessed thing to believe that Jesus KNOWS ALL THINGS, AND FORSEES ALL THINGS, even those which men call contingencies- every danger which is approaching, every enemy who threatens, every trouble which is ahead of me. These things of the future are all dark to me; there may be rocks and breakers at hand, but I cannot see them. But there is One who knows and foreknows all that concerns me, and can provide for all. Every minute circumstance of my history, every step of my march, are known to him long before; and therefore I will not fear. Can I afford to trust my ship to a pilot who knows not the channel? Can I commit my way absolutely to a creature who cannot foreknow the future, and cannot provide for it?
Our joy and hope is, that we shall be put in possession of an inheritance, incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth not away- a KINGDOM that cannot be moved. But who is to be the King? Is it the King eternal, immortal, invisible, or an inferior being? To whom is the regal power in heaven and earth to be committed? The kingdom is to be one that cannot be moved; but unless the King be Divine, it has an insecure foundation, and is the object of a shadowy hope.
The Christian is one who knows the comfort, the value, the power of PRAYER. What would be his condition without it? It is the source of his strength, the means of this victory. The weak, trembling human soul can thereby wield a marvelous power. The electric telegraph is one of the greatest triumphs of man’s skill; and wondrous indeed is the fact that he can take the lighting’s power and force it to obey him, and carry his message thousands of miles in a moment of time. Wondrous it is that thoughts and words can be made to travel over hill and valley, and along the bottom of the ocean through deep waters! But what is this in comparison with the power of a believer’s prayer? It traverses in a moment the space between this world and the right hand of God, and reaches the great Intercessor there. But prayer does more than this. It not only reaches God, and but it has power with God. It is a force moving a mighty hand. It has promise, “Ask, and ye shall have.” “Ye shall have your petitions; I will so direct events, and so shape the course of history, and so bend the wills of men, that your prayer shall prevail.” And there are few of the children of God who could not furnish striking proofs of this: the answers to prayer are oft-times so plain, so wonderful, so unexpected, as to fill us with awe as well as gratitude. This is an amazing privilege: can we give it up? If Jesus be not God, prayer is no longer such a power. It may be a homage, a worship; but the mighty prevalence of the effectual fervent prayer is gone: prayer to Him then becomes only prayer to one who cannot answer; for unless He rules and reigns, and worketh all things after the counsel of His own will, how can He promise to do whatsoever we ask?
Again: we want a Savior EVER AT HAND, and not far off. I cannot have one moment’s peace, security, or strength, unless my Lord be nigh. Leave me to myself, out of the reach of his hand, and, like Peter, I must sink into the waters. The millions of the people of God throughout all the world- all count upon this nearness: He must be nigh unto every one, by the side of every one: He must be omnipresent; but neither saint, angel, virgin, nor any other created being, could be ever present with each and all. He who is, must be God.
Go over the promises that are sweetest and most precious, and see how they are shorn of their beauty and power, of this be not so. “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Who was he that could say this? “Fear not, little flock. Be of good cheer. I have overcome the world. I am the Resurrection and the Life. Come unto me, all ye that are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Peace I give unto you. Not as the world giveth, give I unto you.” Let the idea enter for a moment that Christ is not God, and what are all these promises worth? Would you part with any of them? What would the Christian do if any one of them were shaken” Take all the promises that you love best, that have whispered comfort and courage to you in the hour of trouble and pain- would you lose them? No. But they all collapse and melt away, if this doctrine be not true. Take away the elements of Deity from “the doctrine of Christ,” and your faith is vain; your hope is gone: the sin-stain is still upon the conscience: death has not been abolished: Satan has not been casted down.
Happy is the man who has learned this truth, and who hold it fast, so as to feed upon it and build upon it. He has a peace that flows as a river, a joy full of immortality, a hope which cheers and sustains him in life’s darkest hour; for he knows that He who loved him, and has redeemed and saved him, is the eternal Word, who was made flesh, and dwelt amongst us: that He was with God, and was God: that He has the keys of hell and of death, and is alive for evermore!
To whom shall we go but to the Son of God, who has the words of eternal life?
Everyone is concerned with his or her future destiny. These infinite, open-ended questions of the afterlife appear to us at random times. A death of a beloved family member, an emotional television program or a story told by a friend may provide the mind cause to bring thoughts like these into focus. What happens to us when this life is over? Are Heaven angels bearing wings and harps, sitting on the clouds? Is there a final judgment for individuals, holding them accountable for their actions in this life? If there is a Heaven, does that mean there is Hell also? How can God send someone to Hell instead of Heaven? Is Heaven as great as a Christian believes? Both believers and unbelievers continually wrestle with the reality of an afterlife, heaven and causation’s for an eternal destiny. The questions are real, worthy of asking and insisting of solid answers.
What happens to us after this life is over has been fiercely debated by the science and philosophy disciplines for centuries. Science, while excellent with providing a hypothesis in this area can do little to provide concrete evidence. The existence of heaven cannot be tested evidentially by a designed experiment as with other areas of science. It would follow that since science has little to add, philosophy or more specifically the philosophy of religion is the discipline of choice. Well known Italian physicist and philosopher Galileo Galilei stated, “…the scriptures tell us how to go to heaven, but not how the heavens go.” (Groothuis, 2013) Depending on your beliefs, Jesus of Nazareth is the only one that has been to heaven and returned. An explanation of heaven, the nature of what heaven is, and well-defined directives to gain entrance are contained in the scriptural New Testament account of Jesus and his teachings. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (ESV) offers a sense of this life is not the end. “16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” This verse tells us that even with our earthly bodies “wasting away”, there is more. “The eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison” describes heaven as a place where no association to anything in this life can be drawn too. Many have heard the stereotypical descriptions of heaven, and these thoughts come to mind; all white, with no distinguishing colors, drifting angels sitting of puffy clouds, softly playing harps and of course the “wings”. Verse 21:1 (ESV) in the book of Revelations offers insight as to how heaven will be upon the second coming of Christ. “1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.” This is a tremendous statement. The weight of this shatters the myth of a placid, color neutral heavenly world, while a brand new heaven and earth is established. This would point to a fully restored earth, with real ground for God’s children to dwell and live within the magnificence of Christ and not drifting around on free-floating clouds. Revelations 21:3 (ESV) affords the believer another reason for excitement, as God himself will live in his newly created heavenly earth among us. 3 “…Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” The claim of no pain and crying, all former problems of this life will be gone offers a fantastic argument for belief in heaven. When this life is completed a gift is given. The gift of heaven is one of a new earth, where we will live among our Lord. Consequently, if we are to interpret these biblical texts correctly, no white clouds, wings and harps will be available.
Life on earth can be difficult and unjust. Humanity continues to act selfishly towards one another letting our own self-centeredness wound people we do not know. Even the people we hold closest to our hearts are not immune to unjustifiable hurt and distress. The cries for justice and fairness are heard constantly. As a community, we incorrectly look to government at all levels to protect us from ourselves. This is a misplaced hope, as hope ought to be in the one who created the heavens and earth. Naturally, with God’s promise of heaven also comes with the price of hell. This justice will befall on both believers and skeptics at the Day of Judgment. Each of us will be held accountable for our actions. Actions directed toward others, but also actions imparted on ourselves will be scrutinized. This is true justice. Justice divided fairly and in equal measure from a God fully outside the limits of a finite morality. It follows then if our actions and thoughts are true to God, heaven will be the reward but the opposite hell needs to exist for those who choose a life apart from God. How can a just and loving God send someone to an eternity of hell? How could God not send the unrepentant and unrighteous to hell? For God to unequally measure out justice would make God less of the God he is. God is the quintessential characterization of fairness. In this life, we desperately need him to be God in all of his immensity.
Sin is so horrendous to God, take into account the verse of Matthew 18:9 (ESV) “And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.” The Apostle Matthew uses an incredibly strong analogy that if your eye sins, it would be better to remove the offending body part than continuing in that sin. In the book of James our spoken words are called into question, “And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.” James 3:6 (ESV) These verses are two of many in the Gospels that repeat God’s command for belief in Him and requiring a change of your life for following the only sinless one, Jesus. These passages are direct calls to repent and do our very best to lead a sinless life. At this point, God has literally no choice but to disseminate judgments to hell, if after these declarations man still chooses to exercise his or her “free will” and live a life apart from Him. A one-dimensional definition of Heaven and Hell can be understood as follows:
Heaven is as great as a Christian believes! Luke 12:32 (ESV) 32 “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” God wants to invite us into the Kingdom of Heaven. “Good pleasure” is the phrasing used by the Apostle Luke. The Lord wants to offer us the pleasure of being in his sight. As discussed earlier, scripture does not give the impression of a heavenly space void of all color or a drifting space of clouds. Actually, scripture alludes to heaven as a great feast or party. Isaiah 25:6 (ESV) “6 On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow, of aged wine well refined.” This verse is very powerful with its description of “great” wine and “rich” food alluding to a magnificent celebration. In addition, Revelations 21:18-21 describes, “walls built of Jasper and a city of pure Gold and Glass”. Other jewels are depicted as well, Sapphire, Emerald, Onyx, Carnelian, Beryl and Amethyst among others. All the colors, food and drink in their splendor are illustrated in these scriptural accounts of Heaven. What images come to mind? Perhaps this invokes a great earthly vastness, full of glory and significance grounded in a physical reality, with no pain and sorrow with endless amounts of hope. Contemplate the absolute greatest time ever in your life. Thoughtfully think about on how you felt inside. Now, wonder about what this feeling would be if it was momentously more than it was. The finite human mind can hardly conceive let alone dream of a “heaven” this tremendous.
All have been offered admittance to this heavenly world, whether is the offer is accepted is a choice everyone must make. Micah 6:8 (ESV) “8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God…”
